Foodie Friday: Food For Thought… It’s Your F*%CK’N Time

Remember Your Time is Valuable

Elle here! As women we nurture and we want to make sure everything and everyone is GOOD, but we never think about ourselves as much as we think about others. Well today, I sit here typing to send you a clear message, “focus on you first and always.”

Today’s “Food for Thought” is about knowing your worth and understanding how precious your time is. Too often, we charge below what we are worth because we are wanting to secure a client or we feel too new to charge more. This has to stop immediately. Remember, the bulk of what you are charging is based on your time alone. If you charge below your value you will never get ahead. This is something I had to learn over the past 5 months. I took a job on the West Coast (I live on the East Coast) that was way below what I was worth, but because it was to help a friend of 20 years, I figured I can make this work. Well, it was the worst experience of my life and I was being overworked, while my “so-called” employers felt like they were gifting me with this opportunity. Not only did I meet their true selves, but I learned a valuable lesson; always charge what you are worth that way if it’s not the best experience at least you got paid well.

So when you are pricing your products and services first consider the rate for your time, then the rate for the work you will do. You may think both are the same, but they are not. Let it soak in for a while and you’ll understand it.

Until next time,

Stay hydrated. Stay active. Stay Meditated. Give NO F*CK$.

Never Accept Less Than What You’re Worth

Of all the employment rejection notices/letters I’ve received, this has to be the best one:

Dear Michelle:

Thank you for taking the time to apply for the Front Desk Assistant – Facilities Coordinator/Assistant position with COLDWELL BANKER RESIDENTIAL BROKERAGE COMPANY. While we were impressed with your background and experience, we have decided to move forward with candidates who more closely meet the needs of the role.

Once again, thank you for your interest in Realogy.  We encourage you to apply for future openings for which you qualify.

Best wishes for a successful job search.

Sincerely,

Marybeth

When I initially applied for the position, that was not the title.  Not even on the online application system was it ever referred to Front Desk Assistant.  Unless, they change the role.  I don’t know.  All of which is beside the point.  I love this rejection because it came after I sent Marybeth my own rejection letter declining to move forward.

Why?

The pay would be the same I’m making now, later hours and a longer commute.

No lateral moves.

I know many experts will tell you sometimes you need to take a lesser job to get your foot in the door.

Hon’, that’s what your side gigs are for.  Get to hustlin’ your foot in the door on that end.  Remember, you are an asset to their company/organization/ agency/ firm/ business and they would be lucky to have you.  You have more experience than any candidate they’ve interviewed because you got side gigs on your resume.  Show them.  And never accept less than what you’re worth.
